Our changing climate is influencing the increasing risk of bush fire occurrence and severity.
Over the last few decades, extreme fire weather has increased. Hotter and drier climatic conditions are occurring more often and for longer periods of time. The likelihood of severe to catastrophic fire danger weather in Australia is increasing substantially.

Fire is and always has been a part of the Australian landscape; it is a fire prone country.
When fires occur in undesirable conditions, multiple agencies and individuals attend, working from the ground and the air. Large bushfires are a highly complex, highly extensive and highly expensive operation, sometimes lasting for weeks. Prescribed burning has proven to be crucial in suppression and minimising the occurrence of large scale, high intensity bush fires. There is a direct link between annual prescribed burning program area percentages and bush fire severity and ease of suppression. In order to reduce the risk and mitigate the hazard, fire practitioners implement and maintain a variety of fire regimes throughout the landscape to achieve biodiversity and ecological values, whilst also reducing the higher fuel loads of areas. This reduces the risk of large runs of uncontrollable wildfires affecting life and property assets of local communities. The timber industry formally co-operates with state agencies, providing staff and equipment to carry out fire suppression for public and private land on a voluntary basis, in addition to their own, independent wildfire control. |
