Industry Spotlight
Tell us about your job – what is your role?
I manage the planning and delivery of ABP’s seed and seedling production in WA.
The majority of my job is supervising works at our seed orchards; where Bluegum flowers are hand pollinated and the seeds collected the following season. I’m at the very start of the production line!
What is your favourite thing about your job?
I like that I have variety and the opportunity to work inside and outdoors.
I also take pride in doing the best I can at managing the work crews involved in seed production.
I just love being out at the seed orchard when the weather is calm and there are little birds everywhere; like robins and fairy wrens, it’s really peaceful.
What other timber jobs have you worked at, if any?
My first job was as a trainee for a local environmental organisation. The work we did was all in plantation forestry but a variety such as weed control in the bushland, assisting with research projects and working at seed orchards.
Since then I have been involved in many of the same tasks as well as some other silvicultural work.
What is one thing about the timber industry that people don’t know or realise?
Many people don’t realise how much detail and effort goes into producing one little Bluegum seedling.
What would you like to see change or improve for the future of the industry?
Improved public awareness on the positive impacts that the industry has.
