Industry Spotlight
Tell us about your job – what is your role?
Currently, I am a Leading Hand, supervising a shift crew with Bunbury Fibre Exports at their Bunbury Port Chip Mill. I’m responsible for the organising of the daily duties of my crew as well as being a machine operator on various pieces of heavy mobile plant.
What other timber jobs have you worked at, if any?
Within the industry I started out with Wesfi, now Laminex at their Moore Road facility in Dardanup. In the earlier years, on their production lines, I was a plant operator, and then involved in their laboratory.
With BFE, I started out in the laboratory before being given the opportunity to move into their production areas. My current role includes the operation of all heavy mobile plant located on site including our Caterpillar 972 Loaders, Caterpillar Log Grapple Crane and Bell Logger.
What is one thing about the timber industry that people don’t know or realise?
I believe many people in the community don’t realise how sustainable the timber industry is. Tree resources grow over and over and so many different products can be utilised from their fibre.
What would you like to see change or improve for the future of the industry?
Education to the general public about the sustainability of the timber industry, and how the various resources are managed to provide for everyone’s needs.
Greater investment through incentives to encourage more resource to be established.
The encouragement of, and support for women into timber industry roles which they may not normally be associated with.
